On Wednesday morning, Portuguese newspaper Record featured front page news claiming there had been a meeting between Chelsea and Jorge Mendes for the transfer of Benfica midfielder Enzo Fernandez.

There, it was claimed that until that edition was finished on Tuesday evening, there was still no outcome of those negotiations, as club and agent kept discussing the move throughout the night.

It turns out Record is now back with the latest update on this situation, and according to this new story, there’s still no white smoke in the talks between Chelsea and Mendes.

It’s said that even though the Blues had initially offered an amount of over his €120m release clause, they have now backed down, and there’s actually a very good reason for that.

That’s because Benfica have changed their position regarding Fernandez.

Despite initially working to keep him, they were now told by the player that he wants the move, and they see no sense in holding him until the end of the season.

Therefore, Chelsea know that they have the player’s desire on their side, meaning they can use that to their advantage.

According to record, the ‘negotiations will continue in the next few hours’, with all parties trying to reach an agreement while Fernandez is simply ‘waiting to head’ to London.
