Defender Jannik Vestergaard is set to retire after seeing his contract at Leicester City torn up this summer.
The 34-year-old has elected ot bring an end to his playing career after struggling to find a new club following his departure from Leicester this summer.
The centre-back reached a mutual agreement with Leicester to tear up his deal earlier this year following their relegation to League one. It brought an end to a five-year stay with the Foxes, who he initially joined in a €17.6m deal in 2021.
Summer split with Leicester City
He made 188 appearances for them over that period, but both parties elected to go their separate ways in the summer transfer window.
He has been without a club since that point, and now he’s calling an end to his search for his next destination.
“A sense of saturation has crept in. A feeling that my motivation isn’t just waning, but simply isn’t really there anymore,” he told Politiken.
The defender then went on to explain that, physically speaking, he could actually continue. Indeed, he has received offers from various countries including Germany and England. But none of those offers were ‘capable of reigniting his motivation’.

| Borussia Mönchengladbach | 2016–2018 | 83 | 7 | 1 |

Lack of motivation

His retirement comes six months after he also retired from the Danish national side, having made 59 appearances and scored three goals for his country.
It seems that the motivation to carry on simply isn’t there for the former Leicester City defender. Whether that’s because of a miserable few years with the Foxes is up for debate.
He suffered three relegations as a Foxes player, dropping to the Championship from the Premier League in 2023 and 2025. Then came the ignominy of last season and dropping to League One from the Championship.
It’s easy to imagine that they were motivation sappers, to say the least, and it seems none of the offers he’s received this summer have revived it enough for him to continue.
