Burnley are set to sign Stade Rennais’ Lorenz Assignon on winter deadline day, according to Foot Mercato journalist Santi Aouna.

Galatasaray and Marseille have come forward, but they are in for a disappointment as the 23-year-old will soon complete a move to Burnley.

On Wednesday, L’Equipe reported the Ligue 1 side had told the right-back to find a new club after being left out of manager Julien Stéphan’s plans.

Later that day, Foot Mercato reported the Ligue 1 side and the Turkish club had found an agreement and that the player was waiting in Paris.

Aouna now took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to state that the Frenchman will be flying to England from Paris today, to complete a move to Burnley.

Assignon had hoped to join Marseille, but they dropped out of the race after not receiving approval from DNCG, Ligue 1’s financial policeman.

A fresh report from L’Equipe says the player ‘has chosen’ to join Burnley over Galatasaray, ‘convinced by the arguments of’ Vincent Kompany. The Clarets will sign the defender on a loan deal with an option to buy set at €10m.
