Goalkeeper Álvaro Valles has confirmed he spoke to Aston Villa director of football Monchi in the January transfer window.
Estadio Deportivo cover comments from the 27-year-old today made in an interview with Radio Marca Sevilla in which he confirms talking to Monchi about a transfer.
Valles is currently a free agent after leaving Las Palmas on February 10th following seven years with the club after joining on a free transfer from Real Betis in 2018.
He was linked with several clubs in the January transfer window as he was free to negotiate a pre-contract agreement under the Bosman ruling.
Reports that month stated he had turned down a big offer from Aston Villa, who had been willing to offer a ‘much more beneficial contract’ than their competitors, namely Real Betis. It was also claimed that the goalkeeper had signed a pre-contract deal to return to his former club.
Whether that’s the case remains to be seen, and the goalkeeper is now a free agent anyway, keeping fit ahead of the summer when he’ll be free to join whoever he likes.
That could be Aston Villa, who would be eyeing him as a replacement for number two Robin Olsen given his contract expires in the summer.
Valles has confirmed that he ‘received a phone call’ from Monch, although he failed to make a formal offer to him at the time.
“I am very calm. It is true that it is a somewhat peculiar situation that I have had to live through partly because I have decided to do so,” he said.
“It is not the fault of one or the other, it is something mutual. It is true that it is taking a long time (the wait). I am 27 years old, and I really want to play football, to return to my profession.
“I am a person with fixed ideas when I make a decision and when I believe that something is right for me and my family, I do not usually back down. I always look forward.”
