Racing Club midfielder Carlos Alcaraz is again ‘being approached’ by Wolverhampton Wanderers, as Benfica also eye up a move for him.
That’s according to O Jogo, who cover Benfica’s interest in the player today as Enzo Fernandez appears to be close to a departure.
The Argentina star is currently being chased by a host of clubs in Europe following his performances at the World Cup, where he established himself as a star and set up a race for his signature in January.
Should he leave then Benfica will need to find a replacement and Alcaraz is one of the players they are looking at in Argentina.
O Jogo explain that Benfica have ‘identified’ Alcaraz as a potential option and he is ‘highly rated’ for his attacking qualities, which are similar to Fernandez’s.
However, Racing have put an €18m asking price on their prized asset and that high figure has prompted Benfica to explore other possibilities.
Furthermore, there are other interested parties, namely AC Milan and Benfica, who have already ‘approached’ the player. That could ramp up his price and make him ‘more expensive’, further pushing Benfica to look elsewhere.
Whether Wolves are willing to pay the €18m asking price isn’t mentioned but they have been linked for months, with a report first naming them as suitors back in May.
There have been continuous links since then and a report earlier this month made it clear that Racing were hoping he would ignore the ‘courtship’ from Molineux.
It seems that interest is not going away, so much so that Benfica could look at other targets as they fear Julen Lopetegui’s side could ramp up his price.
