Last summer, Celtic let Gustaf Lagerbielke join FC Twente on a season-long loan deal, and they haven’t agreed a purchase clause with Brendan Rodgers’ side.
On February 27th, Twente technical advisor Jan Streuer confirmed interest in retaining the defender and also insisted Celtic will make the final decision.
Last month, the Sweden international stated he’s powerless over his Celtic future beyond this season.
Dutch journalist Tijmen van Wissing, who covers the Eredivisie side, gives his take on Twente extending the 24-year-old’s stay and Twente Fans have relayed his comments.
The centre-back struggled for regular minutes with the Scottish champions last season and his situation improved at Twente. He played close to 2,100 minutes from 29 games for the Dutch club, but his overall performances haven’t convinced Van Wissing.
Therefore, the journalist has urged Twente officials to not invest a lot of time and energy in trying to extend the Celtic man’s stay.
“He was rightly put in the spotlight a bit in December and January. Then he did nicely at right central back, but at the moment I see no reason to put any effort into bringing him in,” he said.
“He brings you so little in terms of football. It makes you restless, it’s pitiful how he hits balls over the sideline. With the current rate, I wouldn’t put any energy into a new contract for Lagerbielke.”
For now, it’s unclear whether Twente will make an offer to Celtic to buy Lagerbielke. If they don’t, Brendan Rodgers and his side have to make a decision on the Swede in the summer window.
