Tottenham Hotspur defender Pedro Porro has dropped out of Spain’s squad for the international break after limping out of the 3-2 defeat to Aston Villa on Saturday afternoon.
Spain’s official website reported that the 27-year-old ‘has been ruled out’ of the squad announced by Luis de la Fuente for the Nations League.
Spain are due to take on England next week, before clashes against Croatia, Czechia and Croatia again on October 6th.
Aston Villa injury
The Tottenham full-back was included in the initial squad, having established himself as the starting right-back under De La Fuenta. He started five of their seven games at the World Cup this summer, missing the games against Cape Verde and Uruguay.
But he will be unable to add to his 24 caps in this international break due to the injury picked up against Aston Villa.
The full-back started that game on Saturday afternoon but lasted just 19 minutes before being replaced by Archie Gray.
The Spaniard was seen to be visibly frustrated at the blow. He was shown slamming his fists into the ground in frustration before signalling for medical attention from Tottenham’s medical staff. He eventually hobbled off the pitch before being replaced by Gray.
Injury mystery
There have been no indications yet as to what the injury is. He had, though, only recently returned from what had been described as a small muscular injury.
But the injury is considered serious enough for him to be out for at least three weeks as football heads into an extended international break.
Porro previously suffered a hamstring injury earlier this year. That saw him spend 35 days out of action from January to February. Indeed, muscle injuries are a problem for him. He has six on his record since 2019. There’s also a ‘strain’ in 2024 as well.
His latest absencewill be a major blow for Tottenham. It is also another negative point to add to a miserable start to the season. They now head into the international break sweating on whether a key player is facing an extended break on the sidelines.
