While Mikel Arteta may be getting flack after Arsenal’s exit from the Champions League, it’s undeniable that he’s impressed at the Emirates in recent years and earned plenty of supporters.

And one of them appears to be David Luiz, who has hailed the Spaniard after working with him at the Emirates in an interview with AS.

The Brazilian defender joined Arsenal from Chelsea in August 2019 in an €8.7m deal, a surprising deal between rivals that few would have seen coming.

He went on to make 73 appearances in all competitions for the club over a two-year period before he eventually returned to Brazil with Flamengo, where he’s been ever since.

His time at the club saw him working under Unai Emery and then Mikel Arteta, who 55 of his 73 appearances for Arsenal were under.

Their relationship was very much a short one, with the Brazilian one of those the club were quick to move on as they built in a different way and elected to step away from big earning big names such as him.

It seems there’s no hard feelings on that front, though, and instead the defender remains a big fan of the Spanish coach.

“At Arsenal I learned many things from a club that has always played very well, first with Wenger and then had that transition, where I had the opportunity to work with Mikel Arteta, today one of the best coaches in the world,” he said.

“(He) has been very good, that we won an FA Cup and then a Community Shield against Liverpool, who had a great team.”
