“Couldn’t be worse” – Icon singles out Manchester City star after CL exit, very unimpressed

When Manchester City sit down an analyse their defeat to Real Madrid this week, it’s undeniable that Bernardo Silva will be feeling a little sheepish.

And it seems Dutch icon Marco van Basten believes he absolutely should do, with him criticising the midfielder’s missed penalty in Wednesday’s quarter-final defeat.

Silva was the second penalty taker in the clash with Real Madrid after the two sides had drawn 1-1 over 90 minutes and extra time, but his tame effort was easily saved by goalkeeper Andriy Lunin.

The Portuguese midfielder elected to go down the middle with his spot kick but completely fluffed his line, tamely sending an effort towards Lunin who simply stood still and caught comfortably.

The effort was more akin to something seen in a goalkeeper’s warm up than a penalty in a quarter-final shootout in the Champions League and saw the Manchester City star heavily criticised after the game, with many labelling the effort as one of the worst of all time.

Van Basten certainly appears to fall into that camp, sharing his own criticism of the Manchester City star in his analysis on Ziggo Sport.

“If you are talking about a poorly taken penalty, then this is a poorly taken penalty,” he said.

“If the goalkeeper chooses a corner, he can still kick it away with his foot. This one was taken especially bad, really special bad.

“He can mark it, he can wait and see what the goalkeeper does, but he doesn’t do any of that. He shoots it half high, not into the corner and not hard. This couldn’t be worse.”
