Danilo has officially arrived in Rio de Janeiro to begin his spell with Botafogo, becoming the most expensive signing in the club’s history.

Brazilian outlet Globo Esporte report the midfielder landed on Monday night and signed a deal valid until 2029, completing his €22m (around £18.5m) move from Nottingham Forest.

The 24-year-old was welcomed at the airport by fans and members of an organised supporters’ group.

Speaking to the press, Danilo acknowledged the significance of his price tag and made a lighthearted nod to club owner John Textor.

“I found out during the flight that it was the biggest signing in the club’s history – my agent texted me. I’m happy. I hope to honour this money well spent by John Textor with good matches and titles,” he said.

Danilo could make his debut as early as this Saturday against Corinthians, provided his registration is completed in time. Botafogo reportedly have until Friday to finalise the paperwork, and the club is confident that everything will be done by then.

The midfielder also reinforced that a conversation with manager Davide Ancelotti was instrumental in his decision to join.

At first, he was hesitant due to his strong connection with Palmeiras, where he came through the youth ranks and won major domestic and continental titles. But after hearing Ancelotti’s plans, he was convinced.

“It was very important. I’m very happy that he wanted to count on me, and now he’s here. You can count on effort and a lot of determination,” Danilo added.

This is the third professional club of Danilo’s career. After emerging at Palmeiras and winning the Brasileirão, Copa do Brasil, two Copa Libertadores and the Recopa Sudamericana, he moved to Nottingham Forest in 2023.

Although Nottingham Forest may have initially expected more from Danilo’s development in the Premier League, the midfielder struggled to fully establish himself at the club.

With 62 appearances, six goals and four assists, his time in England showed flashes of potential, but lacked consistency. In that sense, the transfer appears beneficial for both sides, offering Danilo a fresh start in familiar surroundings, and giving Forest a solid return on their investment.
