PSV Eindhoven have identified Tottenham Hotspur’s Toby Alderweireld as a target for the summer.
That’s what De Telegraaf are reporting, relayed by Het Nieuwsblad.
The centre-back was with PSV’s rivals, Ajax, for nine years between 2004 and 2013.
The two sides are scheduled to face each other on Sunday and the timing of this report makes it ‘spicy’.
It’s claimed there’s a possibility PSV could see Denzel Dumfries leave the club at the end of this season, and therefore, it’s ‘not surprising’ the Eredivisie side are keeping a ‘close eye’ on Spurs defender.
Alderweireld’s qualities and experience will make him a great addition to the Dutch side. He last signed a contract with the north London club in December 2019 and it runs down in 2023. The ex-Southampton man is a vital player for Spurs under José Mourinho.
The Belgium international had earlier expressed his desire to return to Antwerp. A move to PSV will see him get closer to his birth place as Antwerp is a just over an hour’s drive from Eindhoven.
De Telegraaf confronted Alderweireld about the PSV links over the telephone, but he referred to his agent, Stijn Francis. The representative said: “As an office we do not comment on transfer rumours.”
Francis, however, did not deny the Dutch club’s reported interest. On the other hand, PSV director Toon Gerbrands has responded. He said: “Just like our scouting consists of maybe a hundred players. Alderweireld is not in our plans at the moment.”
