Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo has admitted that Jurgen Klopp expressed his anger in the dressing room after the 3-0 loss to Atalanta in the Europa League.
The forward has been speaking to Veronica in the Netherlands, relayed by MSN, following the shock defeat last night.
A double from Gianluca Scamacca and another from Mario Pasalic secured a comfortable victory for the Italian side in the first leg of their quarter-final meeting.
It was certainly an unexpected result from Gian Piero Gasperini’s side, who secured a huge win despite being dominated by Liverpool when it came to shots and possession.
They seemed to take advantage of a Liverpool who side who were flat on the evening and indeed an Anfield crowd that was also not up to the usual energetic levels for a European night.
The result was certainly a disappointing one given Liverpool’s hopes of winning trophies between now and the end of the season to ensure Jurgen Klopp departs in glory.
The German was certainly unimpressed by the performance from his side after the game when discussing it in the media and Gakpo admits that was on show in the dressing room as well.
“It’s hard to explain, but we just weren’t good enough today,” he said.
“The trainer was not happy, no. They made good use of the chances they got, and then you lose 3-0. I don’t think we were all sharp enough in the matches, with the second balls, with taking advantage of the chances we had, all in all, I think.
“It’s always nice when you can start, but then you hope that you can win. Ultimately, we lose as a team and if we won that would be for the best of course.
“That’s football. Every match you have to try to show yourself. We have a lot of competition, a lot of players who are doing well and then you have to fight for your place. I still believe in it. Ultimately, we are in this competition to win it.”
