Newcastle United and Wolverhampton Wanderer have ‘already approached’ Vélez Sarsfield for midfielder Máximo Perrone.

That’s according to Record, who say the Premier League duo have both already been in contact with the Argentine side about the 19-year-old.

Perrone is currently a target for Benfica, who are eyeing the player as a potential replacement for Enzo Fernandez should he leave this month.

Fernandez has been heavily linked with a move away from Benfica in January following his exploits at the World Cup, where he was one of Argentina’s stars in their eventual win.

The Portuguese side are yet to make any official approach for Perrone, who they see as a player to grow in the background rather than a star for the now anyway.

They could make their move to get him regardless, though, as they know there is interest from elsewhere in the player.

According to Record, Newcastle and Wolves ‘also have their sights on’ the player and ‘have already approached’ the Buenos Aires club, namely Vélez Sarsfield, about a move.

There is no mention of the nature of these approaches, whether they are informal questions about the player or serious bids, just that Newcastle and Wolves have both been in contact regarding Perrone.

That might speed up Benfica’s interest, which at the moment appears to be on the backburner until something definitive regarding Fernandez occurs.
