On Thursday, the Portuguese media reported that an unnamed club placed a €100m for the signing of Benfica star Enzo Fernandez.
Even though the Lisbon press is still to get to know who made that offer, newspaper A Bola today takes a few guesses. The only information they have is that the club is from the Premier League, and Newcastle are now named as a possibility.
The newspaper says the Magpies are one of the ‘main suspects’ to have made that unsuccessful attempt to sign the World Cup champion.
There are not many details on why they think Newcastle were those putting that amount on the table, with the outlet only pointing out that the club were recently taken over by the Saudi fund.
It’s well known that the offer was turned down, but since that’s close to the player’s €120m release clause, there’s now some fear that the interested club could soon come up with those numbers.
That’s why Benfica are already getting prepared for that.
It’s claimed that even if the clause is triggered, they’ll use some arguments to try to convince the player of rejecting the move.
Besides Newcastle, the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool are labelled as other possible bidders for the midfielder, even though A Bola seemed adamant on Thursday that the Reds were not the ones to have come forward.
