Argentine side Boca Juniors are looking to increase Kevin Zenón’s release clause as Newcastle United eye up a move for the winger.
That’s according to Infobae, who say Newcastle’s sudden interest in the 22-year-old will force Boca to look at protecting themselves even further.
A report yesterday stated Newcastle had decided to take a look at Zenón and would be sending a scout to Argentina over the weekend to watch him in the clash with River Plate.
That was followed by another report today explaining Newcastle have already watched the winger and are keen on a deal, which won’t be a problem for them as his current release clause is $15m (£13.8m).
That’s an easy figure for them to pay meaning a deal is there to be done and Boca are aware of this so, according to Infobae, plan to try and change Zenón’s contract.
They want to increase his release clause to $20m (£18.4m) to try and prevent a ‘quick farewell’ and a repeat of what happened with Valentin Barco, who joined Brighton in January after they paid his release clause.
That led to fury at Boca Juniors, and it seems they want to prevent a repeat of it happening with any of their other players down the line.
Whether an increase is enough to put off Newcastle, though, remains to be seen, with journalist Jonathan Riniti reporting that they are serious about signing the Argentine.
“Newcastle is going all out to take Zenón and they will be watching it at the Monumental against River,” he told El Crack Deportivo.
“That is why Juan Román Riquelme is on alert, even though he has a termination clause of $15m.”
