Celtic manager Martin O’Neill can have another opportunity to sign Torino’s Gvidas Gineitis in January.
The Scottish Premiership winners wanted to secure his services in the summer window.
Four days ago, Sport Witness covered a report from Italy explaining that Celtic were in talks to sign the 22-year-old. O’Neill’s side plan was to secure his services for less than €10m towards the end of the window.
Their final offer was reportedly around €8m in fixed fee plus €2m bonuses. That wasn’t enough to convince the Turin club, who deemed their proposal insufficient.
Replacement for Celtic target
Martin O’Neill has already confirmed interest in the midfielder and that Torino’s price was a hindrance for Celtic.
Torino Granata, an outlet dedicating their coverage to the Serie A side, cover Celtic’s failure to sign Gvidas Gineitis when reporting on Rolando Mandragora.
The 29-year-old Italian spent the 2021/22 season on loan at Torino and returned to the club on a permanent transfer from Fiorentina on deadline day.
At the weekend, he made his debut against his former club and scored in the Turin club’s 2-1 win over La Viola. Taking his performances into account, there’s confidence at Torino that he is ‘destined to replace’ the Celtic target.
Fresh opportunity for Celtic
The Italian club made Gvidas Gineitis available for transfer in the summer window. However, he didn’t leave because of the ‘failed agreement’ with Martin O’Neill’s side.
Torino Granata report the Serie A side are likely to put the Lithuania international back on the market in the next window. This presents an opportunity for the Scottish club to make a fresh attempt in January.
Last October, Gineitis signed a new contract until 2029. At that time, Transfermarkt valued him at €6m and it has now decreased to €5.5m.
