Celtic were attempting to sign Torino’s Gvidas Gineitis throughout the summer transfer window. They were presented with a chance even on Thursday but a move didn’t go through.

Earlier this week, Sport Witness covered how the Hoops remained in the race even on Scottish transfer deadline day. Torino were open to a sale, having held discussions with them some days ago.

Several attempts from Celtic were rejected and they were constantly told to meet Il Toro’s valuation of the midfielder.

Despite everything, the deal hasn’t materialised and more details are emerging.

Torino outlet Toro report Celtic had enough time to seal the deal yesterday. Numerous discussions were held between them and the Italian side. At one point, even Salzburg entered the scene.

But the 22-year-old is now set to stay in Turin, as no agreement has been found for his transfer.

TifoGranata add more details, reporting that Celtic’s fresh bid was rejected in the ‘last few hours’. It was their final offer and stood at €8m plus bonuses of €2m.

Torino deemed this insufficient, even if they have signed midfielders in Rolando Mandragora and Daniel Braganca.

While they were open to his sale, the decision is a purely financial one.

January could be an opportunity

Gineitis’ current deal at Torino runs out in 2029. They’re not under pressure to sell but their intentions are different, as they have already replaced him.

Celtic should take advantage of this in January, when things could be easier. He is unlikely to play regularly under Ignazio Abate now, even if he did start the first two games. Mandragora is a proven face in Serie A and should feature over him.

Moving to Glasgow in January could benefit the player too. He will play more for the Hoops and turn his career around.
