Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Santiago Bueno has withdrawn from the Uruguay squad for this international break.
This was confirmed by the Uruguay football association [AUF] via their official website on Sunday. They state the defender arrived at the national team camp with an injury.
It’s claimed the 26-year-old suffered a blow while in action with Wolves, but the nature of the setback isn’t specified.
He played every minute for Gary O’Neil’s side in their last four league games, including Wolves’ 2-0 win over Southampton on November 9th.
The national team’s medical staff carried out tests on Bueno upon his arrival. The results saw him continue to be part of Marcelo Bielsa’s squad and this was agreed in consultation with the Premier League side.
On Sunday, the English club changed their stance with the defender. The AUF confirmed Wolves ‘officially requested’ Bueno be withdrawn, and this has been accepted. Therefore, the player will not be part of the squad to face Brazil and ‘returns to the club’.
‘His club, in the early hours of today, Sunday 17/11, officially requested that the player to return. Given this request and prioritising the health of the player, Santiago won’t travel to Brazil and is disqualified from the call-up,’ a statement read.
O’Neil and Wolves have a concern with Bueno for the clash against Fulham on Saturday.
