Piotr Zielinski and Liverpool is the ultimate story of ‘what could have been’.
The Polish midfielder, back in 2016, was all set to sign for the Reds and become a project for Jürgen Klopp until Napoli came along and swiped him from under the Premier League club’s nose.
Developing into quite the player with the Serie A club under Maurizio Sarri, the 24-year-old has continued his form with Carlo Ancelotti, but the Liverpool rumours never really disappeared.
With renewal talks currently underway, it seemed all that could be behind him, but his agent being spotted with some of Liverpool’s board members in the stands on Tuesday night brought the subject back up again.
In an interview with Polsat Sport, who asked him about it, the midfielder did acknowledge there was some uncertainty surrounding his future.
He said: “Honestly, I don’t know. We talked before [with his agent], but he did not mention anything about a possible transfer. Let’s remember he’s also the manager of Kamil Grabara, so maybe he was discussing him with the Liverpool authorities. I feel very good in Naples, although I don’t know yet whether I will extend my contract.”
The player Zielinski mentioned is a 19-year-old Liverpool goalkeeper, who arrived from AP Ruch’s U19s back in 2016, and is currently featuring occasionally in goal for the club’s reserves, having done so five times this season.
As for Liverpool and Napoli’s Poland international, we haven’t seen anything concrete in a while, but that could change quickly if his agent was indeed there for him rather than Grabara.
