Aston Villa target Nico Williams has insisted he is happy with the interest in him, as it means he is doing his job well.

The forward has been speaking El Periodico de Espana, relayed by Sport, regarding his situation as he links up with the Spanish national team for the international break.

The forward currently finds himself increasingly linked with a move away from Spain as his current contract with Athletic Club Bilbao expires next summer.

Several clubs have been lining up to potentially move for him in the January transfer window, when he will either be available on the cheap or free to negotiate a pre-contract agreement for the summer under the Bosman ruling.

Aston Villa are long-term admirers of him, having eyed up a move in the previous two transfer windows and even sent Unai Emery to hold a meeting with him in the summer.

Neither of those efforts led to a move but they’ve continued to be linked since, with Emery seemingly determined to bring him to Villa Park as his and Aston Villa’s rise continues.

Whether they can beat the big competition for his signature, of if Williams ends up staying with Athletic, remains to be seen but in the meantime, it seems he’s more than happy to be getting attention.

“I feel very good. I think that this season I am making a leap in quality, I am growing as a footballer, which is what I work for every day,” he said.

“That big teams like Barça, Madrid or clubs in England are watching me means that I am doing my job well.

“I am clear about the decision I want to make, but in the end, this is something that my representatives have, who have been with me since I was 11 years old. In the end I don’t like the noise either.

“I don’t like people speaking lies, generating rumours that aren’t true. People talk a lot and that makes me uncomfortable. I think it will be known sooner rather than later, but it will be known, and I think that will leave us all calm.

“We have not set a deadline, but we are following some guidelines that we have set for ourselves. As I have told you, I am calm, these are things that my representatives are carrying out and I want it to remain that way.”
