Nottingham Forest could only manage a draw with Leicester City at the weekend, and after the match the club’s owner Evangelos Marinakis made his way to the pitch and was seen to have a heated exchange with manager Nuno Espirito Santo.
The reaction in traditional media and social media was huge, and perhaps went a bit over the top. Marinakis will absolutely know how well his manager has done, and from Nuno’s perspective he’ll already have been aware his boss isn’t afraid to have the odd emotional explosion.
Tuesday’s edition of Marca has a rather prominent article with a headline reading: ‘Forest’s owner hasn’t forgotten about Valverde’
Ernesto Valverde has had two spells managing Olympiacos, and Marca explain Marinakis is fond of him and wouldn’t mind working together for a third time. Valverde’s first spell at Olympiacos was in 2009, before Marinakis took over… but we’ll let that go.
The manager is currently at Athletic Club Bilbao, his third time in charge of the Basque side. His contract is expiring although a renewal is expected, and Athletic are very happy with their man.
Marca’s slant is that after their spat, Nuno and Evangelos could be in a crisis, the manager leave, and Marinakis then turn to Valverde who he ‘considers one of the best managers he’s ever had’.
It feels unlikely, but a possibility to keep in mind for the future.
