Manchester United are still interested in Barcelona star Ronald Araújo.
That’s according to today’s edition of Sport, which mentions this when providing a background into the Red Devils’ failed efforts to sign the defender.
Manchester United were keen on signing the 24-year-old before he extended his contract in April 2022.
Prior to the last renewal, his deal ran until 2023 and that encouraged the Premier League side to make an approach, either for 2022 or for him to join them for free in the last window.
Barcelona signed the Uruguay international when Ramón Planes was at the Camp Nou. The director left the club in November 2021 and the newspaper states that had slowed down Araújo’s renewal negotiations.
Manchester United saw this as an opportunity to try to convince the centre-back not to sign a new deal at Barca.
It’s said the English club ‘have been the most interested’ team and even made an ‘astronomical and firm offer’ to the South American.
The details aren’t mentioned but the report states Manchester United were ready to double Barcelona’s salary offer.
Araújo had then instructed his agent not to listen to any offers and accept the terms proposed by the La Liga side.
Sport state Manchester United’s ‘interest remains’ and Bayern are also trying to sign him. Despite this, the player still wants to continue at Barcelona.
