Cristiano Ronaldo scored his first goal of the season when he converted from the spot in Manchester United’s win over FC Sheriff in the Europa League last Thursday.
Prior to the clash, the forward made two starts for the Red Devils and they ended up losing both ties.
Erik ten Hag has preferred to bring the Portugal international off the bench in five of the six league games this season. Lack of regular game time at Manchester United has not impacted his place in the national team.
Fernando Santos has included the former Real Madrid star for the upcoming UEFA Nations League games against Czech Republic and Spain. On Tuesday, he received the Quinas de Ouro award and suggested he wants to be part of the national team for a few more years.
“I thank the FPF… if we look at the conditions, futsal, youth teams, women’s… I hope to be part of it for a few more years. I still feel motivated, my ambition is high. I’m in a team with young people. I want to be at the World Cup and at the Euros, I want to assume that now. I’m happy,” he said.
When quizzed whether he was surprised about Ronaldo’s comments on participating at Euro 2024, Fernandes said; “Anyone who could believe that he didn’t want to be in that European Championship doesn’t know him. We know well the resilience, taste and ambition he has shown over the years. It’s not new.
“We know that Cristiano wants to achieve things that others have never achieved. always have the same importance. He is the best player in the world and will continue to overcome barriers that others cannot.”
