Ruben Amorim becoming Manchester United manager meant it was inevitable multiple Sporting CP players would be linked with the Premier League club.

Perhaps most obvious is Viktor Gyökeres, who Amorim helped turn into one of the most prolific strikers in Europe.

Interest may make some sense, although it would require a big financial outlay, however, a transfer in January always looked unlikely. Before he moved Amorim made it clear he didn’t want to go to transfer war with Sporting in the coming window, wanting to protect his legacy there.

Tuesday’s edition of A Bola has an article referencing English claims on Monday that Manchester United had initiated exploratory contacts to sign the Sweden international.

A Bola have followed this up and been told it’s simply not the case. They don’t rule out the possibility, and there’d be no surprise if interest is there but they very cleanly and clearly completely dismiss the claims of contract already having taken place.
