Manchester United could make things difficult for Real Madrid this summer as they target a move for Benfica’s Álvaro Carreras.

That’s according to Marca, who say the re-purchase clause Manchester United have on the defender could make things difficult for the Spanish giants.

They explain that Real Madrid are combing the market for a new left-back and Carreras is currently the priority targets after impressing at Benfica.

He has a €50m release clause in his contract but Madrid intend to negotiate with Benfica to lower that figure as much as possible.

Manchester United, though, have an option to re-sign the defender for €18m, which doesn’t expire until December 31st. That makes them the ‘main concern’ for Madrid as they could step in and make things difficult for them.

Reports had initially suggested they could try to work out a deal that would see Manchester United use their clause and then buy him for a figure lower than €50m. That was later dismissed in Portugal, where they explained it would break FIFA rules on ‘bridging’ transfers.

That has now been ruled according to Marca, with Madrid preferring a direct agreement with their counterparts from Benfica. Carreras, for his part, doesn’t want to return to England.

Manchester United holding that clause can make everything awkward, though, if they want to walk down that path this summer.
