As Barcelona are in the process of signing João Cancelo from Manchester City and have an offer from Manchester United for Marcos Alonso, it’s time to put those two stories together.
Mundo Deportivo now feature a story claiming the Portuguese’s arrival can ‘facilitate’ the Spaniard’s departure.
João Cancelo may be primarily a right-back, but he’s pretty much proved himself as a left-back as well.
So even though Alonso’s departure wasn’t in Barcelona’s plans, it’s said that in case they succeed in signing the Manchester City player, then the scenario has changed.
As reported by the local media today, Manchester United are trying to sign the Spaniard with a two-year contract, and he’s currently thinking about that possibility.
Even though he’d be leaving Barcelona at the end of his contract in 2024, with no fee, that’d actually be a good move for the club as they’d free up their salary cap space.
The word in Spain is that João Cancelo is flying to Catalonia tonight. If that’s right, there are only details to be sorted until his transfer from Manchester City is confirmed, and that should make Manchester United’s task for Alonso a lot easier.
