New Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany has received approaches from Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Brighton & Hove Albion.
That’s according to his father, Pierre Kompany, who told La Dernière Heure, relayed by Het Laatste Nieuws, that he wasn’t surprised Bayern took Vincent away from Burnley last week.
The Belgian had spells at Anderlecht and Burnley before accepting the Bayern job, and his appointment came as a surprise, especially after the Clarets’ relegation from the Premier League.
That wasn’t the case for Pierre, and to make his point, he revealed Chelsea, Tottenham and Brighton have all wanted the manager.
Chelsea and Tottenham looked at the 38-year-old before appointing Mauricio Pochettino and Ange Postecoglou as their managers last summer. The Blues apparently tried again for Vincent after parting ways with the Argentine last month.
“It was a surprise to the whole world. Well, not for me. If you look at which teams have already come knocking: last year you had Tottenham and Chelsea, now Brighton showed interest, and Chelsea again,” he said.
“But when Bayern, a club that is so well structured at all levels, comes knocking, you don’t refuse.”
Pierre insists Burnley’s relegation had no bearing on Bayern’s decision to go ahead with his son’s appointment.
“At Bayern, they did not focus blindly on that relegation. They know Burnley should have gotten more points. They thought it was good that Vincent does not deny his vision when he falls behind,” Pierre explained.
“You may have been captain under Pep [Guardiola], you may have the best friends in the world… They judge you on your performance. Bayern are number one in Germany. They are world class. They leave nothing to chance there.”
