A week ago, Newcastle United confirmed that they will sign Antonio Cordero once his contract with Málaga CF expires on June 30th. The Magpies also stated the 18-year-old is expected to go out on loan after he seals a move to St James’ Park.
Spain U19 manager Paco Gallardo has the incoming Newcastle player in his squad for the UEFA U19 Championship that will start later today.
The opener will be between Spain and Denmark in a few hours and ahead of this clash, Friday’s edition of AS has published an interview with Gallardo.
The manager knows the Newcastle signing well, having handed him his debut for both Spain U18s and U19s. The attacker was a regular during the U19 Euros qualifiers.
Gallardo has coached in England with Leeds, as a technical coach and their U21 manager, between November 2022 and March 2023.
AS specifically asked the manager whether he tries to ‘minimise the noise surrounding’ Cordero, ahead of his move to Newcastle.
Responding to that, he said: “I try to minimise those kinds of situations. I try to keep them grounded. I try to make them see that being here is something unique. He may play many Premier League games in his career, but the U19 European championship is a once-in-a-lifetime event.”
After the U19 Euros, Cordero will complete a move to Newcastle and then find a new club where he can go on loan.
