Following the 3-0 loss to Manchester City, it became increasingly apparent Freddie Ljungberg wasn’t the man to take Arsenal forward following Unai Emery’s sacking.
The Swede was temporarily placed in charge to oversee the transition period, but there will have been some hope his appointment would have injected some life into a dejected team.
However, it wasn’t to be, and one win in four games later, it’s clear a new manager is needed.
Who that could be remains a mystery, but with Carlo Ancelotti seemingly heading to Everton and claims Mikel Arteta held talks with the Arsenal board, it seems the Premier League side would prefer a long-term appointment over a short-term fix.
One question mark about the Manchester City assistant in all this was his lack of experience, which remains largely the same as Ljungberg’s, which is why it isn’t all that surprising to see, at least according to Yahoo! Sport journalist Manu Lonjon, that the Gunners’ number one target is Patrick Vieira.
The former defensive midfielder has already managed a couple of teams, and while he might be struggling a bit at Nice this season, he has shown an ability to get the best out of players, which is exactly what Arsenal need these days.
It’s stated Vieira’s is the ‘most advanced case’ and is the number one choice for the club’s board, with Arteta the other option.
A lot will depend on whether the Arsenal legend wants to leave his current job midway through the season, but he has made it clear in the past that he would find it hard to say no to the club of his heart.
We now just have to wait and see what happens next.
