Last week, Foot Mercato’s Santi Aouna reported Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso is aware of Liverpool’s interest. He had also stated Bayern Munich have the Spaniard on top of their list.
Thomas Tuchel will step down from his post at the Bavarian club after this season and Alonso is in the running to become his successor.
Sky Deutschland journalist Florian Plettenberg took to X, formerly Twitter, to bring the latest on the battle between Bayern and Liverpool for the 42-year-old.
Jürgen Klopp will leave Anfield and the Reds have to find a new manager for next season. The reporter claims they have started the process, by already initiating contact with Alonso’s camp.
It’s currently a race between the Bundesliga winners and the Merseyside club for Alonso. The former have him on top of their list, while they are also aware it’ll be difficult to take him away from Leverkusen.
On Wednesday, Aouna stated Liverpool are ready to make an offer to Leverkusen in the next few weeks, and that Alonso is keen on moving to England.
With Plettenberg’s latest update, it seems like Liverpool want to get ahead of their big rival to appoint Alonso as Klopp’s successor.
Bayer Leverkusen are currently leading the league table, eight points ahead of Bayern Munich.
