Back in April, we relayed news from Spain that Liverpool were one of the clubs to have ‘tested the ground’ to sign Athletic Club Bilbao star Nico Williams.
Fast forward to September and Estadio Deportivo now have a report on the winger’s future.
Earlier today, Sport reported Barcelona have identified the 21-year-old as a target for 2024. This is relayed by Estadio Deportivo, who then provide their own information on this case.
It’s said the Spain international has no intention of leaving the Basque club despite Barca’s interest. Liverpool have ‘asked about’ him, likely in the previous window, but the report states nothing materialised.
Williams’ deal expires next summer and it includes a €50m release clause. The Spanish club have been trying to renew his contract but the current situation would favour Jürgen Klopp’s side [and other interested clubs] for a potential deal in 2024.
Over at El Correo, they state the player is looking to sign a short-term deal [two to four years] so that he can keep the door open to join a top club.
The two parties have started talks and there could be an agreement for the renewal but Athletic start the negotiations from a position of weakness. That’s because the attacker could be available for free next summer and and is already receiving ‘dizzying offers’ from many clubs.
El Correo have made no mention of the Merseyside club in their report.
Liverpool may rekindle their interest in Williams, who can operate on either wing, if they were to allow Mohamed Salah to leave Anfield.
Last season, the Spainard managed nine goals and six assists from 43 games, and has four assists from four games this season.
