Go back over the past few years, and you’ll know that one player Liverpool have been interested in is Borussia Monchengladbach’s, Dennis Zakaria.
The last we heard about a move was back in February when Kicker reported that the Reds had ‘expressed interest’ in a move.
That was the latest in a long line of links to the Switzerland star, with a move having been viewed as near-certain earlier that month and reports in 2020 and 2019 having named them as admirers.
With Georginio Wijnaldum having now departed and Liverpool very much on the hunt for a replacement, we were expecting Zakaria’s name to be brought back into the fold.
He wants a ‘fat transfer fee’ of around €30m for his man, whose contract is set to expire next summer.
That’s yet to happen, though, with Zakaria only managing 24 minutes in the draw with Wales and left on the bench in the defeat to Italy.
That’s because he’s been struggling for form since suffering a ‘serious injury’, more specifically cartilage damage, which was followed by a nine-month break.
Since then, he’s managed 32 games but played 90 minutes just ten times, and that’s completely changed the transfer situation around him.
Before then, BILD say that ‘several were keen’ on his signature, specifically naming Liverpool, Tottenham and Leicester as suitors.
Those three now ‘no longer have the same confidence’ in him, and finding someone to pay the transfer fee that the Germans want is going to be tough.
That’s not stopping Eberl, who is quoted as saying, “We don’t want to have to let players in this category go free at the end.
“We will certainly also sell during this transfer period. But I expect the market to get going late. Possibly only when the clubs from the Premier League get going.”
Liverpool, though, seem to have turned their attention elsewhere, with worries about Zakaria’s fitness, meaning they are no longer as keen as they once were.
