Napoli have positioned themselves to sign Wolves midfielder João Gomes later in the summer window.
The Brazilian international has been a regular this season, making 24 appearances in all competitions so far. His performances haven’t gone unnoticed, and Napoli are one of the clubs who have shown interest.
At the weekend, journalist Gianluca Di Marzio first reported Napoli’s interest in the 24-year-old and explained that Rob Edwards’ side want €40m to sanction a sale after this season.
On Tuesday, we covered another report from Di Marzio. He stated the Serie A side have ‘practically secured’ his signing by reaching an agreement with Gomes’ entourage. It looks like the Italian media jumped the gun with claims of an agreement with the Wolves player.
That’s because later that day, the midfielder said he loves being at Molineux and playing in the Premier League. This should be enough to dampen the Naples club’s confidence.
Wednesday’s edition of Corriere della Sera covers the Wolves player in a report focusing on Antonio Conte.
Scott McTominay’s brace helped Napoli secure a 2-2 draw against Inter Milan on Sunday. Conte received a red card during this clash, showing his passion isn’t dimming at 56.
Lega Serie A have confirmed that they have banned the manager for the next two games and fined him €15k. This means Conte won’t be on the bench against Parma later today.
Wolves relegation seen as key bargaining tool
The newspaper covers this and then reports on Napoli’s potential business in the winter market. The Wolves star gets a mention as he’s a target for the summer.
Corriere della Sera report Napoli are in contact with the player’s agent. They add Wolves’ ‘likely relegation’ should make it cheaper for them to sign the midfielder.
Wolves are 20th in the table and are 14 points behind 17th placed Nottingham Forest. Relegation still looks likely but there’s been little shoots of hope, something Gomes has told fans to cling to.
Indeed, the Brazilian said this week: “I will give my life on the pitch so the team can finish the season safe from relegation.”
Napoli appear to be banking on a relegation fire-sale, which is unlikely even if Wolves go down.
