Leicester City have joined the chase to sign Marseille’s Chancel Mbemba, according to Africa Foot.
The centre-back joined the Ligue 1 side from FC Porto in 2022 and was a regular until the end of last season, making 85 appearances in all competitions. He’s scored 13 goals and made three assists during that period.
However, Mbemba hasn’t made an appearance for Mareseille since Roberto De Zerbi arrived in the summer.
Leicester could rescue the defender from his situation with the French club in the winter market.
Ruud van Nistelrooy wants his side to improve in defence, and the Foxes have set their sights on the DR Congo international.
It’s claimed Leicester are interested in the 30-year-old and have included him in their priority target list for January.
Mbemba was at Newcastle between 2015 and 2018 and has the experience of playing in the Premier League. This could help him settle in quickly if Leicester were to sign him.
His contract expires at the end of this season and the report states it includes a salary of €5.1m per year. Africa Foot say this is a ‘burden’ for Marseille, who want to ‘get rid of him’.
There’s a deal to be done for Leicester in January as long as they convince Mbemba and Marseille.
