Junior Firpo’s arrival at Real Betis from Leeds United this summer is part of a bold strategy from the Europa Conference League finalists to bolster their squad.

That’s according to Estadio Deportivo, who report that the Leeds star will not be the only signing that Betis make in this window.

They explain that the agreement with Firpo, which reports this week have insisted are at the final stages and set to be completed, is only the first part of the Betis leadership’s plans.

The plan is to actually revolutionise their options at left-back, starting with Firpo’s arrival from Leeds, and overhaul the position entirely.

That, though, means Firpo will not be guaranteed a starting position and will have to fight with the players currently at the club or new ones who come in. it’s even said he could find himself in ‘a difficult positio n’once he does arrive.

He had actually asked the club to sell one of their current options before his arrival and that may be on the cards as a part of a ‘comprehensive renewal plan’. But that does not mean he will be the undisputed starter. He will instead be challenged for fight for his place under Manuel Pellegrini.

Whether that’s quite what he imagined would be his situation when he left Leeds this summer is anyone’s guess, but with a deal now in place for him to return to Betis, it seems there’s a fight in his near future.
