Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso is ‘first on the list’ for Liverpool this summer, but Sporting Club de Portugal manager Ruben Amorim also ‘stands out’.
That’s according to journalist Gianluigi Longari, who says those two are currently leading the race to replace Jurgen Klopp at Anfield in the summer.
Klopp announced his surprise departure from Liverpool at the end of last month, revealing that he had decided to move on from Anfield and not see out the final year of his deal on Merseyside.
That started the rumour mill over who is set to replace him, with the job undeniably one of the most desirable in world football at this moment in time.
A long list of names is already being drawn up, with it explained in England that Liverpool intend to take a data-based approach to finding Klopp’s replacement and avoid appointing the wrong man.
Amorim and Alonso have been impressing at Leverkusen and Sporting respectively and find themselves on the names being linked, and according to Longari, are currently topping the list for those in charge at Anfield.
“Liverpool evaluations underway for the bench,” he wrote on X.
“Many candidates in the running, the first on the LFC list is Xabi Alonso.
“Among the alternatives considered by the Reds, the name of Ruben Amorim currently managing Sporting stands out.”
