Having returned from his two-year loan spell at Beşiktaş, Liverpool allowed goalkeeper Loris Karius to join FC Union Berlin on a temporary deal in the last transfer window.

The Reds owned player had to wait until Tuesday to make his first appearance of this campaign for the Bundesliga club, and that came against second division German side SC Paderborn in the DFB-Pokal tie.

Karius conceded three goals and Union Berlin were knocked out of the cup competition following a 3-2 defeat. His manager, Urs Fischer came out in the defence of the custodian.

“In the first half the players in front of him let him down. He did his thing well,” B.Z. quoted Fischer as saying.

There have been recent reports suggesting Karius will return to the Merseyside club in the winter market, and a few rumours also indicated AS Monaco are interested in taking the 27-year-old.

B.Z. states the Liverpool man is ‘not in contact’ with the Ligue 1 side or other clubs. In addition to this, returning to Anfield early ‘should not be an option either’.

Union Berlin take on Werder Bremen on January 2nd, and the report explains first choice keeper Andreas Luthe should be back in the starting lineup for the league tie.

The outlet adds Karius ‘continues to wait for his chance’ and from January, ‘will fight’ for his next appearance.
