Patience is often key when it comes to youngsters and that’s certainly been the case for former Watford youngster Yaser Asprilla this season.
That’s at least according to Sport, who cover the player today and how he’s had a bit of a nightmare with Girona so far.
The newspaper explains that there’s been some regret at Girona over the summer signing from Watford, who is the most expensive in the club’s history.
They handed the youngster the number 10 shirt on his arrival, a decision manager Michel instantly regretted, admitting the number is something that should have been earned all the way back in September.
He believed Asprilla could ‘let it go to his head’ after a summer in which ‘half of Europe’ had been chasing the then 20-year-old after his impressive displays at Watford.
Expectations around the midfielder were enormous and he’s yet to live up to them. In fact, the newspaper says five months in, and he’s got worse, not better.
They say Asprilla is a player ‘brimming with talent’ and it’s clear why the club made their investment but he’s yet to show anything more than flashes of his ability.
2025 has been a disaster, with just three starts to his name and an ever-diminishing role that’s seen him manage just 11 minutes in the last three league games. Manager Michel has even publicly admitted he doesn’t know what to do with him.
Injuries haven’t helped as he’s suffered two major ones and arrived at the club from Watford injured as well. But things aren’t going well, something echoed by Colombian journalist Pipe Sierra.
“It’s very sad,” he told the newspaper.
“So far, he hasn’t been able to make a difference in a team that took a chance on him in the summer and beat Premier League clubs and Porto in the race. Externally, patience is running out.”
