Werder Bremen signed Isaac Schmidt on loan from Leeds United last August after a long saga.
The Bundesliga side agreed personal terms with the right-back while the Whites were reluctant to sanction a quick move. They waited for over a month to agree terms with Daniel Farke’s side.
Schmidt has mainly operated as a left-back for the German club and played 377 minutes from 10 matches.
Last month, Bild explained Werder Bremen manager Horst Steffen has favoured others ahead of him for ‘more stability’. Their head of football, Peter Niemeyer, also confirmed this.
Earlier in the season, claims from Germany explained Werder Bremen haven’t paid a loan fee and will cover his annual salary of €1.5m. They have also secured a €3m purchase option with the Whites.
Weser-Kurier have published a detailed interview with the Leeds United player, during which his future plans came up.
The newspaper pointed out to the Switzerland international there’s the possibility Werder Bremen won’t keep him beyond this season. When responding to that, he made it clear he’ll do everything he can to continue after his loan spell.
Leeds United player ready to give everything
“I understand it; that’s a possibility. But I’m not that kind of player,” he said.
“My top priority is to stay at Werder. And if I absolutely want to stay here, then I have to do everything I can for the club now. I don’t want the club to go downhill. I like it here, I like the fans and the city. But: I have it in my own hands – and yet, I don’t. Ultimately, it’s not a decision I make alone.”
When pressed how realistic is it for him to extend his stay, Schmidt explained: “It’s realistic. When you’re here on loan, it’s like a test where you have to show whether you can be an important player for the club. We’ll see in a few months.”
Isaac Schmidt has a Leeds United contract lasting until June 2028.
