Everton goalkeeper Joao Virginia has admitted he doesn’t know what will happen over his future as he waits for the club to make a decision on him.
Record have a short interview with the goalkeeper today in which he admits he’s edging towards an Everton exit, albeit with a heavy heart.
Virginia is the number two at Everton at this moment in time behind Jordan Pickford and, as such, has spent most of the season sitting on the bench. Everton’s poor performance in both cup competitions has added to his time sat on the bench.
He’s one of a long list of players whose future at the club remains a mystery, with his contract set to expire this summer but Everton yet to move on that front either way.
The Toffees have been leaving all contract talk until the end of the season, leaving a list of players in limbo waiting for them to make a decision.
Virginia is slightly different as Everton have an option to extend his deal by another year, and he admits he’s waiting on them at this point.
“I’m doing well at Everton; it’s a special club for me. I don’t know what will happen. [Uncertainty] is never easy,” he said.
“We were better than the last two years. The arrival of Mister Moyes was positive. But I wish I had played a lot more. I feel a huge desire to play and that hasn’t happened.”
If he were to leave Everton this summer, a return to Portugal has been mooted, with Benfica reportedly interested in him. Virginia, though, insists he has options other than a return to his homeland.
“It’s difficult to predict as I have options outside of Portugal,” he added.
“Since I left there, I know that both Benfica and Sporting have followed my path. Maybe I can come back one day.”
