Niclas Füllkrug left Borussia Dortmund for West Ham United in August of last year and has struggled in his debut season in the Premier League.

The striker scored 15 goals and registered 10 assists for the Bundesliga club the previous season but wasn’t able to replicate it for West Ham.

He picked up two different injuries, limiting his game time at West Ham to 877 minutes from 20 games, managing three goals and two assists in the process.

These setbacks also saw the Germany international miss international breaks in October, November and March before returning to the squad for the UEFA Nations League fixtures this month.

After Germany lost the UEFA Nations League semi-final and third-place tie to Portugal and France respectively, former Germany star Lothar Matthäus looked at who could make it to the national team squad for the 2026 World Cup in this week’s edition of SportBild.

When discussing Füllkrug, Matthäus hints that the 32-year-old could leave West Ham this summer.

“He’s had a difficult season at West Ham and isn’t sure where he’ll be under contract next season. Füllkrug needs to get his rhythm back; I see [Borussia Mönchengladbach’s] Tim Kleindienst ahead of him,” he said.

On May 31st, Füllkrug stated he wants to have a full pre-season in order to “attack again next season.”
