Santiago Giménez’s fine displays for Feyenoord have seen him linked to various clubs and the list includes Tottenham Hotspur.
On September 29th, we relayed news from Italy that AC Milan must watch out for Spurs in the race for the striker.
Last month, TV Play stated Tottenham have shown ‘great interest’ in the 22-year-old. It was also said a few Serie A sides are looking at him but his future is expected to be in the Premier League.
Former Feyenoord winger Eljero Elia told Voetbal Zone, relayed by Feyenoord Pings, that the Mexico international should consider making a switch to Tottenham over other clubs.
“I do think he can take a step. A club like Tottenham, for example, would be good, if not the real top. If he can explode there again, then boom. I hope he won’t take too big a step,” he said.
Vincent Janssen was starring in the Eredivisie before Spurs signed him from AZ Alkmaar in 2016. However, the Dutchman wasn’t able to shine during his time at the north London club and left them in 2019.
Elia seems to have not taken into account that Tottenham are currently leading the table, as he claims Spurs could be a stepping stone for Giménez, to make a jump to a bigger club.
“How you should look at it is this, Feyenoord is slightly smaller than that club. And with all due respect, you see Vincent Janssen, he was top scorer in the Netherlands. Then he went to Tottenham and you hardly heard anything from him anymore,” Elia explained.
“I think Giménez is still a category better [than Janssen], but I hope he makes the right and good step. You never know, maybe if he goes to a top club, it’ll work out. But I think if you take that intermediate step and you also prove that you can make that final step easier.”
Giménez was vital in helping Feyenoord win the title last season, and has extended his good run into this season, managing 15 goals and three assists from 12 games.
