Brighton & Hove Albion’s Deniz Undav has been on loan at VfB Stuttgart since last summer and has done well for them, managing 15 goals and five assists from 24 games.
The forward’s performances have led to suggestions in Germany that the Bundesliga side could buy him in the summer. Last month, Undav revealed that he needs clarity over his future as soon as possible.
Sky Deutschland interviewed the Brighton owned player and directly asked him about the possibility of staying at Stuttgart beyond this season.
“I have a contract with Brighton. As things stand, I’ll be back at Brighton in the summer. But the season is still long. The focus is on VfB. I want to be as successful as possible. VfB are a great club. I’m happy to be here. The fans are great. I’ve integrated well, the team has welcomed me well. I’m not averse to it, in any case,” he said.
The German’s current deal at The Amex lasts until 2026 and his comment would indicate Roberto De Zerbi’s side may have a decision to make on his future.
Recent claims have stated the 27-year-old’s fine displays for Stuttgart will see him get his first-call up for Germany for this month’s international break.
Undav represented lower division German clubs before moving to Royale Union Saint-Gilloise in 2020. He starred for the Jupiler Pro League side, which convinced Brighton to sign him in 2022. He failed to replicate his Union Saint-Gilloise form with the Seagulls, resulting in a loan move to Stuttgart.
When Sky asked about his ‘late career’, Undav explained: “Sometimes I still think: ‘I’ve just scored four goals in the Bundesliga. How does that happen?’ Nobody believed in me. I didn’t believe in myself.”
“I only played football for fun. And when you’re at home, talking to your wife and family and say: ‘I made it after all’. It’s amazing to have that feeling that I’ve proved it to people who never believed in me. It took longer than I thought, it was a different career path.”
