FC Twente’s Alfons Sampsted has been on loan at Birmingham City since last summer and has opened the door to extending his stay at the League One club.
The Eredivisie side took him from Bodø/Glimt in January 2023 and these two teams will face each other in the Europa League play-offs on Thursday. Twente sealed a 2-1 win in the first leg last week.
Ahead of the European clash, ESPN NL had a chat with the Birmingham City player, and the majority of the interview is about Twente and Bodø/Glimt.
He was also asked about his future at the English club.
The report states Birmingham City have an option to buy the Iceland international and he is of belief the Blues will exercise it.
“I think there’s probably a chance of me becoming a Birmingham player in the summer. From there we’ll see where it goes. As things stand now, I’ll become a Birmingham player,” he said.
The right-back went on to explain he will return to the Netherlands in the future but isn’t certain whether it’ll be as a player.
“I had a nice time. I’ve played quite a lot. We reached European football twice in a row. I have met many beautiful people. I have had the experience of football and country. I do like the Netherlands. I’ll be back. As a player or as a tourist,” Sampsted explained.
The 25-year-old has made 14 appearances for Birmingham City and hasn’t featured since he suffered an ankle injury in October. He’s eager to return to the pitch but aware it won’t be easy for him.
On his current situation, he said: “The team is doing well. Unfortunately, I have been injured and ill, that is less. But everything else is going well. Until my injury I played quite a lot.
“It takes quite a long time to get back. I have been recuperating throughout November, December and January.
“Now I’m finally back, so I hope to return. That is not easy, because the club is doing well. There is no big reason to change much. But I have the feeling that if I do my best, I will be there again.”
Birmingham City are leading the League One table and are currently six points ahead of second placed Wycombe Wanderers with two games in hand.
