Aston Villa midfielder Amadou Onana has admitted he thinks there’s been a breakdown in relations with the Belgium fanbase, asking for patience as they build under Domenico Tedesco.
DH Net cover comments from the Aston Villa man today as he looks to ease growing tension among the Belgian set up.
Pressure has been growing on Belgium over the last few months amid a difficult run of results that’s seen them winless in their last three, losing twice to France and drawing with Italy.
That’s come on the back of a disappointing showing at Euro 2024 in which they failed to make it out of the group stages after losing to Slovakia, beating Romania and drawing 0-0 with Ukraine.
It’s a trying time for the Red Devils, who are very much in a post Golden Generation situation and trying to work out who the new stars of the national team are.
Onana is certainly one of the leading candidates and one of the leaders in the new group, having impressed for Aston Villa under Unai Emery this season.
And he now wants to see trust rebuilt with the Belgian fanbase, believing the relationship has deteriorated between the two parties.
“I think it has deteriorated a little,” he said when asked about the relationship between the public and the team.
“We had some problems at the Euros, and again now. Personally, I think we should have a little more patience. Why do I say that? Because everyone is talking about 2018, but 2018 was not created in 2018! It may have been built since 2010.
“That generation took a long time to become the golden generation, as the media have nicknamed it. You have to be more lenient with us. Give us time to grow, to learn. The group is not very experienced. It will take time for us to become what people expect of this team.”
