Oriol Romeu has admitted his late move to Girona was put in jeopardy by Romeo Lavia’s injury at Southampton.
Romeu returned to his homeland on deadline day of the transfer window, bringing an end to a seven-year spell with Southampton following his arrival from Chelsea in 2015.
He went on to make 256 appearances in all competitions for the club, establishing himself as a key player under several successive managers.
A departure this summer had not looked likely but the signings of Romeo Lávia and Joe Arivo had created further competition in Southampton’s midfield.
That opened the door to a departure for Romeu, who has taken the opportunity to return to his homeland at Girona as a result.
Reports late on had suggested the deal could collapse courtesy of an injury to Lávia, who pulled up with a muscle injury in the 2-1 win over Chelsea.
That injury prompted Ralph Hassenhüttl to suggest the player could be on the sidelines for a while and Romeu admits that there was a danger his exit would be blocked.
“Until last night there was a lot of back and forth and it wasn’t easy for the last ten days,” he told AS.
“But thanks to the two clubs an agreement was reached. With Lavia’s injury there were doubts, but they have been flexible and prioritised my wish, I am grateful to Southampton.
“I have had an unbeatable experience and sensations there. I will keep great memories.
“I’m happy to live this new adventure and I hope I can leave here, in many years, in the same way.”
