Ajax overpaid when they spent €24m to sign defender Calvin Bassey from Rangers FC this summer.

That’s according to analyst René van der Gijp, who believes the Dutch giants set the bar too high when paying that figure for the centre back, who had previously shined under Giovanni van Bronckhorst at Ibrox.

Bassey moved to Ajax from Rangers in the summer, with the Eredivisie champions targeting him as a replacement for Lisandro Martinez, who had left to join Erik ten Hag at Manchester United.

It was a big move for the 22-year-old, who had only spent two years at Rangers previously following a move from Leicester’s U21’s in 2020.

He’s struggled with the step up so far, putting in a series of shaky and unconvincing performances both in the Eredivisie and Champions League.

The latest came in last night’s defeat to Ajax, which left the Dutch side third in Group A with just one win from their four games so far.

Bassey started the game at left-back and struggled once again, leaving Van der Gijp less than convinced by what he’s seen from the former Rangers man.

“If you spend €24m for Bassey, you must have seen him all year, right?” Voetbal Primeur report him saying on Veronica Offside.

“€24m, how high do you set the bar? That Napoli midfielder who comes from Fulham (André-Frank Zambo Anguissa), a great player, much better than Álvarez and Sangaré, you can already see that after a quarter of an hour.

“€5m for Conceição, fine, but €24m for Bassey…”
