Gianluca Scamacca’s fine displays for Sassuolo last season attracted attention from several clubs, including West Ham United.

The striker scored 16 goals in 36 league matches last season. His qualities and profile convinced the Hammers to invest €36m plus €6m in potential bonuses to secure his services.

Sassuolo CEO Giovanni Carnevali insisted the new West Ham signing is the present and future of Italy. He hailed the 23-year-old as the “complete striker”, while admitting the player still has a lot of “untapped potential.

Although receiving praise from Carnevali, the Italy international is yet to find the back of the net or register an assist for his country from seven matches.

Il Giornale interviewed Italy manager Roberto Mancini, and he was asked about players leaving Serie A and making a move abroad.

“I hope they have a chance to play. That would be a good thing. That’s how you grow. The Italians once remained here, now they are still few abroad compared to those of other nations,” he said.

When specifically asked about Scamacca’s decision to join David Moyes’ side, the former Manchester City manager said his compatriot’s past experience of playing away from Italy could help him settle at West Ham.

“He had already had the experience. He was one of the first to emigrate, to Holland. He can give a lot to the Premier League, but it won’t be easy. The important thing is that you play and improve,” Mancini explained.
