Early on in the January transfer window, it was reported that Arsenal were taking an interest in Montpellier forward Elye Wahi.
The youngster is becoming quite the player in Ligue 1 this year, even if his team overall aren’t performing quite as well.
He has scored eight goals and picked up two assists in 21 games, but his performances overall are said to have caught the attention of a number of big clubs, including Arsenal, who have a long history of developing French talent.
With three caps to his name with France’s U21s, Wahi falls into that category, and there are some who believe a move to the Emirates could be just what he needs to take his game to the next level.
Among those are 1998 World Cup champion Bixente Lizarazu, who was asked about Wahi and what his future could be made of.
Relayed by Foot-Sur7, he said: “He has great athletic qualities, he’s really quick, really sharp, very good in front of goal. If he makes the right choices, when I hear Arsenal or Dortmund, I think that it would be a good choice for a young player to go to those clubs, to progress some more.
“Even if with Montpellier, he’s already improved enormously. It’s rare to see such young and precocious forwards, but that’s the case these days, and there’s a next level to go get, abroad, probably.”
