Once hailed as Arsenal’s next big thing, Serge Gnabry never really built on his few impressive cameos at the London club, and a transfer to Germany was one of the late deals of the summer.
The 21-year-old was apparently of interest to Bayern Munich, according to reports, with talk of a transfer to the Bundesliga champions followed by a loan to Werder Bremen, but the final result was a direct transfer to the latter of the two.
According to SportBild, two of his former teammates are to thank for his transfer in Mesut Özil and Per Mertesacker.
The German magazine published an article on their website on Wednesday explaining the ins and outs of the deal, and the former Real Madrid attacking midfielder is said to have convinced Gnabry to choose Bremen, as it was the club that helped him develop into the player he is today.
As for Per Mertesacker, the BFG only had nice things to say about the youngster to his former club, which persuaded them to spend €5m on Gnabry.
SportBild say that if all goes to plan, the winger won’t see out his contract at Bremen, with a move to bigger things and a profit for the German club down the line the most likely outcome.
And, according to their own information, there are already rumours of a move to Bayern Munich planned by the player’s representatives, with contact between them and the Bundesliga champions already happening.
Basically, if other big clubs come for him in one or two years time, expect Bayern to be one of them.
Especially since the player’s contract apparently includes a release clause.
